Permanent Account Number — India's Tax Identity
PAN (Permanent Account Number) is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric identifier issued by the Income Tax Department of India under Section 139A of the Income Tax Act, 1961. It is India's primary tax identification number, assigned to every taxpayer — individual, HUF, company, firm, trust, or NRI — who is liable to pay income tax or is engaged in specified financial transactions.
The PAN follows the format AAAAA9999A — the first three characters are alphabets (series), the fourth represents the taxpayer type (P for individual, C for company, H for HUF, F for firm, A for AOP, B for BOI, G for government, J for artificial juridical person, L for local authority, T for trust), the fifth is the initial of the taxpayer's surname, the next four are numerals, and the last is a check digit alphabet.
PAN is used by the Income Tax Department to track all financial transactions of a taxpayer — salary, investments, property purchases, business income, TDS deductions, and ITR filings — in a centralised database. It is linked to Form 26AS (annual tax statement), AIS (Annual Information Statement), and TIS (Taxpayer Information Summary), ensuring complete tax trail for every individual and entity.
From April 2023, the government has made PAN-Aadhaar linking mandatory. Unlinked PANs are treated as inoperative, attracting a ₹1,000 reactivation fee and preventing ITR filing, TDS credit claims, and financial transactions.

Who Must Apply for a PAN Card?

Salaried Individuals

PAN-Aadhaar Linking — Avoid Inoperative PAN
Under Section 139AA, every individual who is eligible to obtain Aadhaar must link it with PAN. As of July 2023, unlinked PANs have been made inoperative — meaning you cannot file ITR, banks cannot process TDS credit in Form 26AS, and financial transactions will be blocked. To reactivate an inoperative PAN, a ₹1,000 fee must be paid under Section 234H, and linking must be done via the Income Tax e-filing portal. The process takes 4–7 working days after fee payment. The following fields can be corrected or updated on your existing PAN card without changing the PAN number: full name (including spelling corrections or name change after marriage), father's name, date of birth, gender, address (for correspondence purposes), photograph, and signature. PAN correction is done by filing a 'Changes or Correction in PAN Data' request on the NSDL or UTIITSL portal, supported by relevant documents (marriage certificate for name change, birth certificate for DOB correction). The updated card is dispatched within 7–15 working days. Your PAN number remains unchanged throughout the correction process.
